Fat Injection

Fat injection is a wonderful technique for filling in depressions in any area of the body. The most popular procedures are lip enhancement or filling in depressed areas of the face and body. The greatest advantage is that it is your own tissue and won’t be rejected. Fat injections may have to be repeated because your body will absorb a percentage of the fat cells. The amount of absorption is unpredictable and tends to do best in areas that are adynamic or where there is less body movement. For example, fat injections for lip augmentation will absorb a fair amount and require two to three injections. In contrast, fat injected into the cheek area would tend to have less absorption and have a greater survival of the fat cells.
The best method for
fat injection is the technique developed by Sidney Coleman, MD. The procedure
uses a small cannula for liposuction from the abdominal area. The fat
is then centrifuged. The fat is separated into three layers—a pure
fat layer, an oil layer and a red blood cell layer. The pure fat layer
is transferred into a syringe. The fat is placed in small “threaded”
tunnels at various levels to ensure better contact with the blood supply.
The success rate for this method is greater then injecting one large amount
of fat into an area.
