Are you a candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a new procedure that uses special cooling plates and cooling energy technology to kill fat cells in your body. It isn't a way to lose weight, but if you have areas of your body you have worked hard on that are being stubborn and you can't seem to get rid of the excess fat, CoolSculpting is perfect. It isn't for everyone though, so it does help to have a better understanding on who makes a good candidate for the procedure. Here is everything you need to know about who should get this done and more about the procedure and recovery experience.

Who is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?

Because CoolSculpting is not a 'weight loss' surgical procedure, it isn't appropriate for everyone. However if you are about 20-30 pounds overweight with very specific problem area, you may be a good candidate for the procedure. Doctors don't want you to have an excessive amount of weight to lose or use this as a way to rid your body of all fat, instead of using healthy lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise. It isn't sucking out your fat either, or causing you to lose pounds. What it does is sculpt those areas by killing the fat cells. If you have areas of slight bulge where you could grab the area (like love handles) it is a good place to get the CoolSculpting done. These sections will be placed in between two cooling plates during the procedure, so it can only be a couple of inches.

CoolSculpting Versus Other Methods

CoolSculpting is sometimes compared to other procedures, but it is actually quite different. One way this process is unique is because it kills the fat cells permanently, unless new fat cells grow in this area due to gaining weight after the procedure. Other procedures include using lasers to rid the body of fat, but this causes the fat cells to tighten the connecting tissue, therefore it isn't as permanent of a process as the CoolSculpting technique. This also doesn't use any type of surgical procedure, numbing or injections of medications. It is completely non-invasive and non-surgical.

Skin After Recovery

There is no need to worry about your skin after recovery, but it is very elastic and has the ability to expand and contract with changes in your body. However, this isn't something you can entirely predict. Because CoolSculpting is only removing a small amount of fat cells and only if you are about 20 pounds overweight or less, you don't usually have loose skin issues in this area. If your skin has a lower elasticity in the area, it may become slightly droopy, but consult your doctor if it becomes a problem. For the majority of the people getting CoolSculpting, it isn't an issue, because the fat isn't going away quickly like with liposuction, and it isn't a large amount of fat being removed or reduced.

The main problem with loose skin after losing weight is because either a large amount of weight was lost, or because it was lost over a short period of time. For example, if you were pregnant, the skin on your stomach and hips stretched gradually, but then you had your baby and your body goes down rather quickly. This can cause stretch marks and loose skin. But it isn't the same thing with CoolSculpting.

Contact Dr. Delgado if you feel like you make a good candidate for the CoolSculpting process. If you have minimal weight to lose and only a few inches of fat in problem areas, it will work well for you.
